Cookbook Favorites 2014 – and my annual giveaway! December 21, 2014

Favorite Cookbooks of 2014

Every December here on the blog, I highlight my favorite cookbooks and then give some away to a lucky reader. It’s one of my most favorite things I do all year, as far as cooking and the blog are concerned. I’ve been absent from this space…but my year is slowing down…and I just couldn’t let this tradition fall to the wayside. While I haven’t been here as much as I’d like to be – and I PROMISE THAT’S GOING TO CHANGE – I have the most wonderful readers here on RWT and the most active, lovely and inspiring folks that have followed me to Instagram. It was another great year for cookbooks – less slick and fancy than years prior but there were so many that were chock full of personality and wonderful recipes. I think this year’s picks have lots of character and uniqueness….and I’m so happy to share my favorite books of 2014 with you. For details on how you can win ANY THREE of these nine listed that you’d like, read through to the end of the post and comment below. Here we go!:

  • A Change of Appetite by Diana Henry – This book, along with the new Donna Hay book, was the most visually stunning book of the year. The photos really resonated with me and told the story of the recipes included in the book – the tale of someone whose tastes are changing and is striving to eat healthier and lighter. It also inspired me to go and check out Diana Henry’s other books…all of which are incredible
  • The Vegetarian Flavor Bible by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg – I’ve sung the praises of The Flavor Bible on this blog many, many times. This year, they released a companion to that classic. Only this time, it focused solely on vegetarian flavor pairings. It’s already become a staple in our kitchen – we’ve also used it looking for flavor combinations and inspirations for cocktails, as well.
  • Plenty More by Yotam Ottolenghi – Everything we’ve come to expect from Ottolenghi: dynamic recipes full of interesting plays on color and texture, inspired vegetable cooking and drop dead photography. This book is just more of it…and I’m way happy about that.
  • Death & Co. by David Kaplan and Nick Fauchald – This book, which is the progeny of the New York cocktail bar of the same name, is likely the definitive book on cocktail history, culture and creation. It’s beautifully produced, as well – this looker would show well on your stylish bar cart.
  • Donna Hay: The New Classics by Donna Hay – Just when you think the folks at Donna Hay can’t make a more lush, captivating cookbook…they go and do just that. This tome – coming in at nearly 450 pages – is a collection of both sweet and savory recipes from the magazine. It’s simply stunning and super convenient to have so many Donna Hay recipes in one place.
  • Pick a Pickle by Hugh Acheson – Initially, I ordered this book out of my support for Southern food hero Hugh Acheson – we recently moved out of Atlanta to the area where Acheson first made his name cooking. I quickly fell in love with the format of the book – it is convenient to work with in the kitchen, the photos are straightforward and all of the recipes sound like they could be instant put-up staples.
  • Twelve Recipes by Cal Peternell – Cal Peternell started working on this booklet as a cooking guide for his son as he took off to college. The premise is simple: twelve recipes that you need to know how to cook. That small project turned into a full blown cookbook…and the recipes in it are solid staples that everyone should know. Peternell is a chef at Chez Panisse…so I’m inclined to listen to him. The book is worth it for the avocado dressing alone.
  • A Boat, A Whale & a Walrus by Renee Erickson – I learned about Renee Erickson’s restaurants through Instagram – so many folks were constantly going to The Whale Wins as well as The Walrus and the Carpenter. The personality of those spots really shine through in this charming book. The recipes are seasonal and local and full of personality.
  • The Slanted Door by Charles Phan – The book so many have been waiting for finally arrived this year: a cookbook from the legendary Slanted Door in San Francisco. It’s the stuff of legends…and some of the classic Vietnamese recipes are included in the book. It’s also so stinkin’ beautiful – modern and rustic at the same time. I have about a dozen recipes dog-eared to try.

As has become an annual tradition on my blog,  I’m giving away 3 of the books on this list to ONE lucky winner. It’s my thank you to y’all for hanging out and hanging in there throughout the year…and for being so much a part of my life in other ways – I’ve been away from the blog but y’all are still so supporting in so many ways.  You get to choose ANY THREE of the nine listed in this postJust leave a comment below letting me know which three you’d like to receive. I’ll be picking the winner (and closing comments) on December 31st  at 4 pm EST– my holiday/Happy New Year gift to you! PLEASE make sure you leave your email in the comment or your comment signature so I can get in touch with you if you win! As this is not a sponsored post & something I’m doing on my own, I’m unable to ship outside the US. Thanks for understanding and good luck!
