more than half-full December 31, 2010

It was this past Wednesday and I was waiting for my local late afternoon farmers market to get set up. Sitting in the parking lot of my bank, which is where the tents go up & a few local vendors sell their wares, I sat in the car biding my time. Usually there’s a bit of a late start and last minute scramble to get it all going, which means I’m often standing around…shuffling my feet or fidgeting with my shopping bag mindlessly until everyone is ready. That afternoon, in my car instead to protect from the cold, was anything but mindless. Seated there, no radio playing but a slight buzz of the heat running, I was overcome. Completely overwhelmed. Teary eyed at the thought of how hectically beautiful and incredible this past year has been. I let myself cry that afternoon and be full of emotions – all of them positive – and gratitude.

I could easily do a “best of” post or a “Top 10 Things That I Ate/Made/Did” post here on this blog. Well, it wouldn’t be easy because I’d have a tough time choosing which things to list but suffice to say I’d have plenty of material to pick from. It got off to a rocky start and there was more loss than I care to discuss. Those people are still in my heart along with all the amazing new folks I’ve met. However, when I look back on this past year, I’m all but incredulous. I’ve gotten to live this lifelittle ol’ me. I’ve traveled overseas. Stood on top of a mountain twice as tall as the Eiffel Tower. I’ve seen more of our amazing country than ever before. Spoken about this dream job I am blessed to be able to do every day – and did so with some of my most amazing peers. I’ve styled some great food with great teams of people. Oh…and this blog. This amazing place I can come to and share food and the memories that come with them. I could go on and on.

Instead, I’m writing this on New Years Eve day as the coffee pot percolates and the day of cooking, cleaning and dressing the table gets on its way. I’m writing this to say thank you to the force – all of you as well as the one bigger than all of us – that has powered what I can only say has been a life-changing year. Full of appreciation for being given the energy, determination, and creativity to make things happen I could have only dreamed of before this past January. Tonight, as I sit at a table full of my family of friends in a home I get to share with someone I love immensely, I’ll be making a toast to all of you and the lives we’ve been able to share here in 2010 in hopes we’ll get to do it all again next year. My glass has certainly been more than half-full.

Oh this makes me so happy. I want to write my own post proclaiming gratitude for a more-than-half-full cup. One of the things I am grateful for this year was meeting kindred spirits like you and Chris at Blogher food. I was lucky to site across from you on the bus that Saturday. Plus I will never forget that infamous egg salad!
