helping the thaw January 13, 2011

Four days. It’s been four days since the snow fell and we’ve been to a grocery store…or anywhere, really. It was only five or so inches of snow…but the resulting ice from subfreezing temperatures has rendered the city immobile. Last night, we were able to gingerly walk to a pub a block from our loft and our meal – overly dense Falafel and cheap red wine sitting at the bar – felt positively luxurious. Our cars haven’t moved. Our parking lot, which doesn’t get much in the way of sunshine, resembles a skating rink still. Groceries stores – even if they were open – haven’t received any deliveries. So, we’ve stayed inside. Watched movies. Played Yahtzee. I’ve been doing a lot of surfing online, as well. Obsessively refreshing my RSS reader. Heck, I even made my own Etsy treasury – there’s good stuff in there.

In an effort to mix things up a bit – and break up the monotony of my online circle of friends and links – I put the call out on Twitter for some inspiration. Some beauty. Some deliciousness. Boy did I ever get a response – I was introduced to new blogs, new photographers, new recipes and new friends on Twitter. It certainly lifted my spirits…and I thank you. Since some of you on the East Coast are experiencing what we here in Atlanta are (hopefully) coming out of, I thought I’d share some of the wonderfulness I found this week. Besides, a little inspiration and loveliness never hurt anyone, right? I’ll be posting food again on Saturday with this week’s Saturday Soup. In the meantime, here’s whats been helping the thaw:

Thanks again to Maigh for letting me use her image in this post. I saw it yesterday and fell in love with it. I hope you do, too. Check out more of her photos here on her Flickr stream.

I am so glad you were able to make it out! Even if for a little while. I am going to attempt another outing today. Wish I could have gotten the German Chocolate Cupcakes to you!

Thanks for all these links. Will give me something else to look at during this 4th Snow Day. :) Cheers!

I *loved* that photo from Helen at Tartelette yesterday – so gorgeous. This is a great list to help take our minds off our cabin fever for a bit. Thanks for sharing!

Niki – I totally swooned when I saw that. So simple and gorgeous…and I’m a sucker for Asian soups. Glad to hear the link love took some of the edge off! :)

I wish I could take credit for it, Wanda. It was taken by my friend Maigh…and I just loved it. Fit the mood of the day perfectly :)

Angharad – PFTDT is a link I got from someone on the RWT facebook page. I’ve subscribe to it in my RSS reader. I love it, too :)

What a beautiful photograph! Give a warm feeling in a chilly winter day. Lovely! and all the links are pretty good too. We’re stuck at home with no groceries and fresh air ourselves so I know how these beautiful links might have helped you :-)
Have a good one!

tami Jan 14, 2011 02:01 pm

Oh no! You’ve been stuck inside, too. I hate to hear that for anyone. Good luck getting out & getting back to cooking :)

I feel your pain. I can’t get my car out, but I may have to slide my way to Publix on foot later today out of desperation!

The new recipes I’ve bookmarked to try over the past 5 days are overwhelming. Thanks for adding to the list. :)

After 5 days, we made it 1/2 a mile to the local Kroger that I normally abhor – it was a very welcome fieldtrip. Nevertheless…$3.99 for ONE red pepper!? Crazy talk. Can’t wait until I can make it to the farmers market. I, too, have bookmarked a ton of new stuff…and was more than happy to share it with all of you. Good luck getting out this weekend!

Your list makes me think of the beloved items that collect in the bottom of my purse; the tokens, mementos, and notes that I stumble upon, get inspired by, and don’t want to live without (so I lug it all around in this bottomless bag). Thanks for sharing. Glad you survived the snow-cation ;)

Love, love, love this post. A little inspiration is warm sunlight on a chilly winter day. A big toothy grin for Postcards from the Dinner Table…saying yes to that RSS. Tks for sharing!

What a fantastic list! I’ve been stuck inside a lot, but due to illness rather than being snowed in, so browsing these links will be wonderful. Thank you for the kind words as well!

Love that photograph! Isn’t twitter a great place for food people like us? Lately I rely heavily on twitter for inspiration, people come up with all kind of great suggestions in no time :) Those links you got are fabulous!

I have added a link to this article at my blog.

Great blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?

A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog jump out.
Please let me know where you got your theme.
Thank you
