venice, italy – part 2 – january 2015 February 7, 2015

venice, italy - january 2015 - running with tweezers

in the water taxi on the way to the palazzo, i took about 200 photos with my phone. incessantly snapping away. i’d never seen anything like venice. from the moment i stepped out of the airport, i knew i had been transported – in all senses of the word. that was my goal, the purpose of the trip – to start out the year in a way that forced me out of my comfort zone and into a place wide open for creativity.

some of the things i love and am the most passionate about – the joy of making photos, writing, being present on my blog, the exploration of cooking – had fallen to the wayside of late in favor of travel, the busiest year of work yet. all of the excuses we make time and time again. i needed this jolt to get myself re-aligned. creatively adjusted. when i read about the local milk retreats and saw this workshop – for some reason, this was what was calling out to me.

so i went to venice. i stayed in a historic palazzo on the grand canal. i woke up and – rather than immediate looking at my phone – flipped open a notebook and wrote. i sketched. i happily lugged my camera around. i futzed with napkins and props. i ate soup with almost every meal, which most of you know makes me really happy. i let myself be open to learning, to new ideas. i took some naps. i met some amazing ladies who were all on the same journey but for all different reasons.

for being a place i never really even thought about visiting, venice has had quite an effect on me. weeks later, it’s hanging around me like a shawl wherever i go.

thank you to those that worked so hard to put on such a magical workshop:  beth kirby, my dear ginny branch, skye mcalpine, aaron teece, and lisa garcia. i’ve never met a group of people that are all so ferociously talented while being delicate, beautiful souls at the same time.

There’s so much to love about this post – I’ll be coming back to it again to see your beautiful photos again. Love the portrait of the woman peeking out through the door, the freshly picked fruit. All just lovely.
